Verge secures blocks with Proof of Work but supports five mining algorithms (Scrypt, X17, Lyra2rev2, myr-groestl, and blake2s) rather than one. Spreading hashpower across multiple algorithms is intended to broaden participation and reduce the chance any single mining method dominates the network. The target block time is about 30 seconds.
