A programmable blockchain platform built around three coordinated chains and a sampling consensus that reaches finality in about a second. Its C-Chain runs the same smart contracts as Ethereum, so the stablecoins, lending and trading apps of decentralized finance run here too.

How it works

Three chains, one network.

Avalanche splits the work across three purpose-built chains and agrees on the result with a sampling consensus that settles in about a second. Here are the four ideas that make that possible.

The shared ledger

Balances and transactions live in a public record copied across independent nodes worldwide. No company owns it; anyone can run a node and verify it.

Smart contracts

The C-Chain runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so Solidity code deploys here unchanged. The same contracts power swaps, loans, stablecoins and NFTs.

Gas & fees

Every action costs a small fee in AVAX that pays validators and stops spam. On the C-Chain the base fee is burned, and fees are typically cents.

Snowman consensus

Validators stake AVAX, then repeatedly poll small random samples of peers until they converge on one answer. That gives finality in about a second.

How Snowman consensus reaches finality
1

Stake

A validator locks at least 2,000 AVAX as a bond to join the primary network. Staked funds back honest behavior and earn a yield.

2

Sample & query

To decide whether a transaction is valid, a validator asks a small random sample of peers, then repeats with fresh samples, shifting toward whatever the majority reports.

3

Converge & finalize

After enough rounds, the whole network locks to the same result. Finality lands in roughly a second, with no waiting for later blocks to confirm.

The three chains under the hood
C-Chain
Contract Chain, the EVM
Runs Solidity smart contracts with the same bytecode as Ethereum. This is where DeFi, stablecoins and most assets live.
P-Chain
Platform Chain, coordination
Tracks validators, handles staking and delegation, and holds the registry of every Avalanche L1.
X-Chain
Exchange Chain, asset transfers
Handles creation and transfer of assets. Each chain is tuned for its own job rather than forcing everything through one.
What you can build
  • ERC-20, fungible tokens & stablecoins
  • ERC-721, unique NFTs
  • Avalanche L1s, custom appchains
  • Written in Solidity or Vyper

Because the C-Chain uses the same standards as Ethereum, a token deployed here works in EVM wallets, exchanges and apps, including Zypto, on day one.

Reliability
Continuous block production since mainnet (Sept 2020)
Avalanche has produced blocks since launch, with rare interruptions. Multiple node implementations and a broad validator set reduce the chance that one software fault halts the chain.
March 2023A bug in a node release caused a roughly four-hour halt in block production on the network. A patched release restored normal operation and no funds were affected.
Ecosystem

What people actually build on it.

Most of the value sits on the EVM C-Chain, with a growing set of sovereign Avalanche L1s for games and institutions. Here's the landscape and where the value sits.

DefiLlama

DeFi

Lending, borrowing, trading and yield, Aave, Benqi, GMX, Trader Joe. $1.66B in total value locked.

NFTs & gaming

Fast finality and low fees suit games and collectibles, many running on their own Avalanche L1.

Stablecoins

USDC and USDT circulate natively on the C-Chain, the backbone of payments and savings on Avalanche.

Avalanche L1s

Projects launch sovereign appchains with their own rules and validators, secured alongside the primary network.

EVM compatibility

Because the C-Chain runs the same virtual machine as Ethereum, assets and apps move between the two with familiar tooling. Explore Ethereum and other integrated chains.

What is Avalanche in one sentence?
Avalanche is a public, programmable blockchain platform built from three coordinated chains, where its EVM-based C-Chain runs smart contracts for stablecoins, DeFi, NFTs and other tokens.
What are the X-Chain, C-Chain and P-Chain?
Each chain has one job. The C-Chain (Contract Chain) runs EVM smart contracts and holds DeFi and most assets. The P-Chain (Platform Chain) handles staking, validators and the registry of Avalanche L1s. The X-Chain (Exchange Chain) handles asset creation and transfer.
How does Avalanche reach finality so quickly?
It uses Snowman, a Proof of Stake consensus where validators repeatedly poll small random samples of peers and converge on one answer. That process settles transactions in roughly a second, rather than waiting for many later blocks to confirm.
What is an Avalanche L1 (subnet)?
An Avalanche L1 is a separate blockchain with its own rules and validators, registered on the P-Chain. After the Etna upgrade these subnets became sovereign L1s, letting games and institutions run a chain tuned to their own needs.
Is Avalanche available in the Zypto App?
Yes. You can hold, swap and self-custody AVAX and C-Chain tokens in the Zypto App, and spend a subset (AVAX, USDT, USDC) through Zypto Pay. For live prices and charts, see the AVAX price page.
