How it works

High throughput, by design.

Aptos is a proof-of-stake Layer 1 that aims at consumer-scale applications. It pairs the Move language with a parallel execution engine and a fast Byzantine fault tolerant consensus. Four ideas make that work.

The Move language

Aptos uses Move, originally created for the Diem project. Move treats digital assets as first-class resources, with strong safety guarantees against bugs like double-spending or accidental loss.

Parallel execution

A pipelined engine runs independent transactions at the same time rather than one after another. Its Block-STM approach detects conflicts and resolves them, so unrelated transfers do not wait in a single line.

Proof of Stake consensus

Validators are chosen by stake and agree on blocks through a Byzantine fault tolerant protocol in the HotStuff lineage. APT holders can delegate stake to validators and earn rewards, with sub-second finality.

Upgradable protocol

Aptos was designed for reliability and the ability to upgrade the protocol in place, without hard forks, so the network can evolve while staying live for consumer-scale applications.

How a transaction settles
1

Submit

You send APT. The transaction is signed with your private key and broadcast to the network, where validators collect it for an upcoming block.

2

Execute in parallel

The pipelined engine runs independent transactions at the same time. Its Block-STM approach detects conflicts between them and resolves the order, so throughput stays high.

3

Finalize

Validators reach Byzantine fault tolerant agreement and commit the block. Finality is fast, on the order of sub-second to a second, with no long wait for confirmations.

The layers under the hood
Language
Move, assets as resources
Move treats tokens and other digital assets as protected resources rather than plain numbers. The type system enforces that a resource cannot be copied or accidentally dropped, reducing whole classes of bugs.
Execution
Parallel, pipelined engine
Independent transactions run at the same time through the Block-STM approach, which optimistically executes in parallel and re-runs only the transactions that actually conflict.
Consensus
Byzantine fault tolerant Proof of Stake
Validators are selected by stake and agree on blocks through a BFT protocol in the HotStuff lineage. APT holders can delegate stake to validators and share in the rewards.
What it supports
  • Payments, fast transfers with sub-second finality
  • DeFi, Move-based smart contracts and protocols
  • Gaming & NFTs, assets modeled as Move resources
  • Consumer apps, built for high throughput at scale

Aptos aims at consumer-scale applications. The Move language and parallel execution are meant to keep common actions fast and predictable as usage grows.

Reliability
Designed for in-place upgrades, no hard forks
Aptos was built with reliability as a goal, including the ability to upgrade the protocol while staying live. Validators reach Byzantine fault tolerant agreement, so no single operator can change balances or reverse settled transactions.

Payments

Fast transfers with sub-second finality and low latency, suited to everyday payments and high-volume consumer use.

DeFi

Move-based smart contracts power lending, trading and other protocols, with assets modeled as protected resources for added safety.

Gaming & NFTs

Games and collectibles use Move resources to represent in-app items and tokens, with parallel execution helping handle bursts of activity.

Consumer apps

High throughput and an upgradable protocol target apps built for large audiences, where reliability and predictable performance matter.

Built on Move

Unlike chains that model assets as plain balances, Aptos uses Move to treat them as protected resources with stronger safety guarantees. Learn the basics in our crypto basics guides.

What is Aptos in one sentence?
Aptos is a Layer 1 proof-of-stake blockchain built for high throughput and low latency, using the Move programming language and a parallel execution engine to settle transactions with fast, sub-second finality. Its native asset is APT.
What is the Move language?
Move is the programming language Aptos uses, originally created for Meta's Diem project. It treats digital assets as first-class resources with strong safety guarantees, so the type system prevents bugs like double-spending or accidentally copying or dropping a token.
How does Aptos process transactions in parallel?
Aptos uses a pipelined execution engine. Its Block-STM approach runs independent transactions at the same time and detects conflicts between them, re-running only the ones that actually clash. Unrelated transfers do not have to wait in a single line, which keeps throughput high.
Can I stake APT?
Yes. Aptos uses a Byzantine fault tolerant proof-of-stake consensus where validators are chosen by stake. APT holders can delegate their stake to validators and earn rewards. The supply is inflationary through staking rewards, with the rate decreasing over time.
Is Aptos available in the Zypto App?
Not yet. Aptos isn't integrated in the Zypto App at the moment. You can request it above, we prioritize the chains with the most demand, and follow the live APT price on the APT price page while it lands.
