Overview

Hedera at a glance.

Hedera reaches agreement using the hashgraph algorithm and finalizes transactions in a few seconds with low, predictable fees. Here is its design and how it is used, not the price.

How it works

How Hedera works.

Nodes share what they know about transactions with each other through a process called gossip-about-gossip, which spreads both the data and a record of how it spread. Each node can then replay that history and calculate the agreed order of transactions on its own, a method called virtual voting, without sending separate voting messages. The result is asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerant finality reached in a few seconds.

Not a blockchain

Hedera uses a hashgraph data structure instead of a single chain of blocks, so transactions are ordered through gossip and virtual voting rather than mined or proposed blocks.

Council governance

The network is governed by the Hedera Council, a group of independent organizations that run nodes and make decisions, with membership terms to rotate over time.

Predictable fees

Transaction fees are denominated in US dollars and paid in HBAR, so the cost of a transfer or contract call stays stable at fractions of a cent regardless of HBAR market movements.

Native services

Beyond transfers, the network offers built-in services for issuing tokens, recording verifiable timestamps through the consensus service, and running smart contracts.

Ecosystem & usage

What Hedera is used for.

HBAR is used to pay fees and secure native services such as token issuance, payments, the consensus service and enterprise supply-chain tracking.

DefiLlama

Tokenization

Issue and manage fungible and non-fungible tokens directly through the native token service rather than a separate contract.

Payments

Send value with fast finality and low, predictable fees suited to high-volume transfers.

Enterprise and supply chain

Record verifiable, ordered events through the consensus service for audit trails, provenance and supply-chain tracking.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is Hedera a blockchain?
Not in the traditional sense. Hedera uses the hashgraph consensus algorithm, which orders transactions through gossip-about-gossip and virtual voting rather than mining or proposing blocks.
How fast and cheap is Hedera?
Transactions reach finality in roughly 3 to 5 seconds, and fees are denominated in US dollars at fractions of a cent, paid in HBAR.
Who runs the network?
It is governed by the Hedera Council, a group of independent organizations that operate the network nodes and make governance decisions.
Can I hold HBAR in the Zypto App?
Not yet. HBAR isn't in the Zypto App at the moment. You can hold it in any self-custodial wallet, and you can ask us to add Hedera using the "Request Hedera" button above.
