AlgorandNATIVE ASSET · ALGO

A Layer 1 blockchain built for payments and tokenization, with blocks that finalize in about three seconds and never fork. It runs on Pure Proof of Stake, selecting proposers and voters at random by stake, and ships with native asset issuance, atomic transfers and smart contracts.

How it works

Finality in seconds, without forks.

Algorand keeps one shared ledger that a randomly selected committee agrees on every few seconds. Selection is weighted by stake but private, so the network stays secure without large minimums or slashing. Four ideas make that work.

Pure Proof of Stake

Block proposers and voting committees are chosen at random, weighted by the ALGO each account holds. There is no large staking minimum and no slashing, so taking part stays open.

Random, private selection

A Verifiable Random Function picks committees privately and non-interactively. No one knows who is selected until they act, which makes the process hard to attack or predict.

Single-block finality

Blocks finalize in about three seconds with immediate finality. The chain never forks, so a confirmed block cannot be reversed and there are no confirmations to wait for.

Fixed supply

Algorand has a fixed maximum of 10 billion ALGO, all created at genesis and released over time. There is no ongoing mining issuance, so the cap is set rather than growing.

How consensus adds a block
1

Propose

You send ALGO. The transaction is signed with your private key and broadcast. A Verifiable Random Function selects a proposer for the next block, weighted by stake and known only once they act.

2

Vote

A randomly selected committee, again weighted by stake, votes on the proposed block. Because selection is private and non-interactive, the committee changes each round and is hard to target.

3

Finalize

The agreed block is added in about three seconds with single-block finality. The chain never forks, so once the block is in, the result is final and cannot be reversed.

The layers under the hood

The ledger and accounts
Balances, Algorand Standard Assets and contract state are tracked directly in the ledger. Blocks finalize every few seconds with no forks, so settled balances stay settled.
Consensus
Pure Proof of Stake
Proposers and voting committees are selected at random, weighted by stake, using a Verifiable Random Function. Selection is private, so the network stays secure without large minimums or slashing.
Built-in features
ASAs, Atomic Transfers and the AVM
Native asset issuance, multi-transfer atomic groups and smart contracts on the Algorand Virtual Machine are part of the protocol, with State Proofs for trustless cross-chain communication.
What it supports natively
  • Algorand Standard Assets, tokens and tokenized real-world assets
  • Atomic Transfers, multiple transfers that all succeed or all fail
  • Smart contracts, logic on the Algorand Virtual Machine (AVM)
  • State Proofs, trustless cross-chain communication

Algorand bakes asset issuance, grouped transfers and contracts into the protocol itself, so common actions stay cheap and predictable, with the AVM available for custom logic.

Steady use. Activity on the network has trended up as tokenization, payments and DeFi usage grew, with quieter stretches in between. Single-block finality keeps each transaction settled the moment it confirms.

Each block finalizes in roughly three seconds with no forks, so a confirmed payment is settled and cannot be reversed.

Reliability
Continuous block production since mainnet launched in 2019
Algorand has produced a new block every few seconds for years. Pure Proof of Stake selects a fresh random committee each round, so no single operator can change balances or reverse settled payments, and the chain never forks.
Design noteBecause selection is private and the chain finalizes a single block at a time, Algorand avoids the fork-and-reorg risk seen on some networks. Honest participation needs no large minimum and there is no slashing, which keeps taking part open while keeping the ledger secure.
Ecosystem

What Algorand is used for.

The network focuses on payments, tokenization and DeFi, with asset issuance and contracts built into the protocol. Here is where it is actually used, and how it reaches into the wider crypto economy.

Payments

Fast, low-cost transfers with single-block finality make Algorand a fit for everyday payments, settling each transaction in about three seconds.

Tokenization & RWAs

Algorand Standard Assets let teams issue tokens and tokenized real-world assets natively, without writing a separate contract for each one.

CBDC pilots

Several central bank digital currency pilots have explored Algorand, drawn to its finality and the low energy cost of Pure Proof of Stake.

DeFi

Smart contracts on the AVM, with Atomic Transfers grouping steps together, support decentralized exchanges, lending and other DeFi on the network.

Unlike chains where every token is a separate contract, Algorand issues assets natively as ASAs and groups transfers atomically. Learn the basics in our crypto basics guides.

What is Algorand in one sentence?
Algorand is a Layer 1 blockchain built for payments and tokenization, finalizing blocks in about three seconds with no forks, secured by Pure Proof of Stake, with a fixed maximum supply of 10 billion ALGO, its native asset.
What is the difference between Algorand and ALGO?
Algorand is the blockchain, the shared network and software. ALGO is the native asset that lives on it, used to pay network fees and take part in Pure Proof of Stake consensus, where selection is weighted by the ALGO an account holds.
How does Pure Proof of Stake work?
Block proposers and voting committees are selected at random, weighted by stake, using a Verifiable Random Function. Selection is private and non-interactive, so no one knows who is chosen until they act. There is no large staking minimum and no slashing, which keeps participation open while keeping the network secure.
What does single-block finality mean?
Algorand finalizes one block at a time in about three seconds, and the chain never forks. Once a block is confirmed it is final, so a settled payment cannot be reversed and there are no confirmations to wait for.
Is Algorand available in the Zypto App?
Yes. Algorand is integrated and an official Zypto partner. You can hold and self-custody ALGO, send it in seconds, swap it, and spend it through Zypto Pay. For live prices and charts, see the ALGO price page.
