Sonic at a glance.
Sonic launched in January 2025 as the successor to Fantom Opera, carrying forward its DAG-based Lachesis consensus while introducing a new execution client, a redesigned database layer, and a migration path for FTM holders to upgrade to the S token.

How Sonic works.
Sonic uses the Lachesis protocol, a DAG-based asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus mechanism. Unlike linear blockchains, Lachesis allows events to be created and confirmed in parallel across validators, enabling sub-second finality without a leader bottleneck. Validators stake S tokens to participate in consensus and earn fees.

Lachesis DAG consensus
Events from different validators are woven into a directed acyclic graph rather than a single chain. Finality emerges from the structure of the DAG, enabling high throughput and sub-second confirmation without waiting for a single leader.
Redesigned execution client
Sonic introduced a new EVM execution client (SonicGeth) with a rewritten database and state storage layer, significantly reducing disk usage and improving read/write performance compared to Fantom Opera.
FTM to S migration
Existing Fantom Opera FTM holders can upgrade to S tokens through an official migration bridge. The S token is the native currency of the Sonic network used for gas and staking.
Fee monetization for developers
Sonic introduces a fee monetization mechanism where smart contract developers can earn a share of the gas fees generated by their contracts, creating a direct revenue stream for builders.
What Sonic is used for.
Sonic launched with existing DeFi protocols migrating from Fantom Opera alongside new applications attracted by the improved throughput and developer fee sharing. The ecosystem spans DEXs, lending markets, and yield protocols.
DeFi with fast finality
Trading and lending protocols on Sonic offer sub-second confirmation times, reducing the exposure window between signing and settlement for active DeFi users.
High-frequency applications
On-chain games, derivatives, and other latency-sensitive applications deploy on Sonic to benefit from the high TPS target and fast block times.
Developer-incentivized protocols
The fee monetization model attracts developers who want to earn revenue from protocol usage rather than relying solely on token incentives.
EVM migration from Fantom
Fantom Opera projects and users can migrate to Sonic with minimal changes, carrying forward existing contracts and liquidity into the upgraded environment.
