Overview

Linea at a glance.

Linea opened to the public in July 2023 as Consensys's zkEVM rollup. It uses zero-knowledge proofs to validate transaction batches, enabling Ethereum-level security with lower costs and faster confirmation than transacting on mainnet.

How it works

How Linea works.

Linea executes transactions off Ethereum mainnet and generates zero-knowledge validity proofs that are posted to Ethereum. A verifier contract on mainnet checks each proof before accepting the state update, meaning the chain cannot advance with invalid transactions. There is no fraud proof waiting period: finality is determined by proof verification, which typically takes minutes rather than the seven-day window of optimistic rollups.

Consensus: ZK Rollup with zkEVM proofs

EVM equivalence

Linea targets bytecode-level EVM equivalence, meaning existing Ethereum contracts can be deployed without recompilation or changes to the developer workflow.

ZK validity proofs

Every batch of transactions is accompanied by a zero-knowledge proof verified on Ethereum. This means the state is cryptographically provable rather than relying on challengers to catch fraud.

ETH as gas

Users pay fees in ETH, the same token used on Ethereum mainnet. There is no separate rollup token required for gas.

Consensys ecosystem

Linea is built by the team behind MetaMask and Infura, which means deep integration with widely used Ethereum developer tooling from day one.

Ecosystem & usage

What Linea is used for.

Linea's DeFi ecosystem has grown steadily since mainnet launch, with DEXs, lending markets, and bridging protocols deploying early, supported by incentive programs and the network's connection to the MetaMask user base.

DefiLlama

Low-cost DeFi

Trading, lending, and liquidity provision run on Linea at costs well below Ethereum mainnet, with the same EVM contract security.

Token and NFT minting

Collections and tokens deploy on Linea using familiar EVM tooling, with minting fees a fraction of mainnet costs.

MetaMask integration

Linea is available natively in MetaMask, giving it immediate reach to one of the largest installed bases in Ethereum.

Developer migration

Teams with existing Ethereum contracts can deploy on Linea with minimal changes, letting them offer users lower costs while reusing audited code.

FAQ

Common questions.

What makes Linea different from other ZK rollups?
Linea targets bytecode-level EVM equivalence, which means existing Ethereum tooling and contracts work without modification. It is built and maintained by Consensys, the company behind MetaMask and Infura.
Does Linea have its own token?
As of early 2026, Linea uses ETH for gas. There has been community discussion about a potential network token, but none has launched on mainnet.
How long do withdrawals from Linea take?
ZK rollup withdrawals are faster than optimistic rollup withdrawals because there is no fraud proof window. After a proof is verified on Ethereum, assets can be withdrawn, typically within hours depending on proof generation and finalization time.
Is Linea safe to use with large amounts?
Linea's ZK proofs are verified on Ethereum mainnet, providing a strong security baseline. Like any rollup, it has a centralized sequencer in its current stage of decentralization, which is a known trade-off that the team is working to reduce over time.
Can I hold assets on Linea in the Zypto App?
Not yet. ETH isn't in the Zypto App at the moment. You can hold it in any self-custodial wallet, and you can ask us to add Linea using the "Request Linea" button above.
