Overview

Dogecoin at a glance.

Dogecoin launched in December 2013 as a light-hearted take on Bitcoin and grew into a widely used payments coin. Here is how it works and what it is used for, not the price.

How it works

How Dogecoin works.

Miners compete to solve a Scrypt hashing puzzle, the same algorithm Litecoin uses, and the winner adds the next block about once a minute and earns a fixed reward of 10,000 DOGE. Since 2014 Dogecoin has been merge-mined with Litecoin through auxiliary proof of work, so Litecoin miners can secure both chains at once without splitting their effort.

Consensus: Proof of Work (Scrypt)

Miners compete to solve a Scrypt hashing puzzle, the same algorithm Litecoin uses, and the winner adds the next block about once a minute and earns a fixed reward of 10,000 DOGE. Since 2014 Dogecoin has been merge-mined with Litecoin through auxiliary proof of work, so Litecoin miners can secure both chains at once without splitting their effort.

From meme to network

Dogecoin started in 2013 as a joke based on the Doge Shiba Inu meme, but it runs a real, independent blockchain that has produced blocks continuously ever since.

Scrypt and merge mining

It secures the chain with the Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm and, since 2014, is merge-mined with Litecoin, so Litecoin miners can mine Dogecoin at the same time and lend it their hashpower.

Steady, uncapped issuance

There is no maximum supply. A fixed 10,000 DOGE is created with every block, so new coins are added at a constant rate and the percentage inflation declines over time.

Built for spending

Roughly one-minute blocks and very low fees suit tips, small payments and everyday transfers rather than long-term scarcity.

Ecosystem & usage

What Dogecoin is used for.

DOGE is used mainly as a medium of exchange for tipping, community fundraising and low-cost payments rather than as a base for DeFi or smart contracts.

Tipping and micropayments

Send small amounts quickly and cheaply, the use that made Dogecoin popular in online communities.

Peer-to-peer transfers

Move value between people with about one-minute confirmations and minimal fees.

Merchant payments

Accept DOGE for goods and services through payment processors that support it.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is Dogecoin a real blockchain or just a meme?
It is a real, independent proof-of-work Layer 1 that has run continuously since 2013. It began from a meme but operates its own network, ledger and mining.
Does Dogecoin use mining or staking?
It uses proof-of-work mining with the Scrypt algorithm. Since 2014 it has been merge-mined with Litecoin, so Litecoin miners can secure both chains at the same time.
Does Dogecoin have a supply limit?
No. A fixed 10,000 DOGE is issued with each block and there is no maximum supply, so new coins are added at a steady rate while the inflation rate falls over time.
How fast and cheap are Dogecoin transactions?
Blocks are produced about once a minute and fees are typically a small fraction of a cent.
Can I hold DOGE in Zypto App?
Not yet. DOGE isn't in Zypto App at the moment. You can hold it in any self-custodial wallet, and you can ask us to add Dogecoin using the "Request Dogecoin" button above.
