Overview

Oasis at a glance.

Oasis launched its mainnet in 2020 as a privacy-focused Layer 1 that separates consensus from execution and runs a confidential EVM called Sapphire. Here is how it works and what it is used for, not the price.

How it works

How Oasis works.

Oasis splits the network into a consensus layer and an execution layer. The consensus layer uses a proof-of-stake, Byzantine fault tolerant protocol run by validators who stake ROSE, and it reaches instant finality, meaning a finalized block is not reverted. Smart contracts run separately in execution environments called ParaTimes, so transaction processing can scale independently of consensus.

Consensus: Proof of Stake (BFT)

Oasis splits the network into a consensus layer and an execution layer. The consensus layer uses a proof-of-stake, Byzantine fault tolerant protocol run by validators who stake ROSE, and it reaches instant finality, meaning a finalized block is not reverted. Smart contracts run separately in execution environments called ParaTimes, so transaction processing can scale independently of consensus.

Two-layer design

A consensus layer secures the chain while separate runtimes called ParaTimes handle execution, which lets the network add execution environments without changing the base layer.

Sapphire confidential EVM

Sapphire is a ParaTime that runs Ethereum Virtual Machine contracts inside hardware-protected enclaves, so contract inputs and state stay encrypted while remaining compatible with Solidity. It went live in 2023.

ParaTimes

Each ParaTime is an execution environment with its own rules. Emerald is a standard EVM environment and Sapphire is the confidential one, and ROSE is used for fees across them.

Proof-of-stake security

Validators stake ROSE to take part in consensus, and holders can delegate their stake to validators to help secure the network and earn rewards.

Ecosystem & usage

What Oasis is used for.

ROSE is used to pay transaction fees, to stake and delegate for network security, and to take part in governance across the network and its ParaTimes.

GeckoTerminal

Confidential smart contracts

Build EVM applications on Sapphire where contract data and state are kept encrypted from validators and the public.

Network fees and staking

Pay gas in ROSE and stake or delegate it to validators to secure the network and earn rewards.

Standard EVM apps

Deploy ordinary Solidity contracts on the Emerald environment using familiar Ethereum tooling.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is Oasis used for?
It is a privacy-enabled Layer 1 whose Sapphire runtime lets developers build EVM applications that keep contract data confidential, and ROSE is used for fees, staking and governance.
What makes Oasis a privacy chain?
Its Sapphire ParaTime runs EVM smart contracts inside hardware-protected enclaves, so contract inputs and state stay encrypted rather than being public by default.
Does Oasis use mining or staking?
It uses proof-of-stake. Validators stake ROSE to secure the consensus layer, and holders can delegate stake to validators, rather than mining with proof of work.
How fast are Oasis transactions?
The consensus layer uses a Byzantine fault tolerant protocol with instant finality, and blocks are produced roughly every six seconds.
Can I hold ROSE in Zypto App?
Not yet. ROSE isn't in Zypto App at the moment. You can hold it in any self-custodial wallet, and you can ask us to add Oasis using the "Request Oasis" button above.
