Overview

DigiByte at a glance.

DigiByte (DGB) launched in January 2014 as a fully proof-of-work blockchain focused on speed and decentralization. It spreads mining across five separate algorithms so no single type of hardware can dominate the network, and it targets a fifteen second block time. The supply is capped at 21 billion DGB, scheduled to be fully mined by 2035. Here is how it works and what it is used for, not the price.

How it works

How DigiByte works.

DigiByte uses five mining algorithms, SHA256, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit, and Odocrypt, each finding about a fifth of blocks. A per-algorithm difficulty adjustment, which the project calls MultiShield, retargets after every block so one algorithm cannot run ahead. Spreading work across five algorithms is intended to make a 51 percent attack harder because no single hardware type controls the whole chain.

Five mining algorithms

DigiByte mines with SHA256, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit, and Odocrypt, dividing block production across different hardware types.

MultiShield difficulty

Difficulty for each algorithm retargets after every block so block timing stays near the fifteen second goal.

Odocrypt

One of the five algorithms, Odocrypt rewrites part of its own code on a schedule to discourage dedicated ASIC mining hardware.

Ecosystem & usage

What DigiByte is used for.

DigiByte is used for payments, identity, and issuing digital assets on its proof-of-work chain.

Fast payments

Send DGB with a fifteen second target block time for quick everyday transfers.

Digital assets

Issue tokens and assets through the DigiAssets layer built on the DGB chain.

Digital identity

Use Digi-ID, a DigiByte sign-in method, to authenticate to apps without a password.

FAQ

Common questions.

Why does DigiByte use five algorithms?
Splitting mining across five algorithms means no single hardware type can control the network, which is intended to make a 51 percent attack harder.
How fast are DigiByte blocks?
DigiByte targets a fifteen second block time, faster than many older proof-of-work chains, to support quick transactions.
What is the supply of DGB?
DigiByte is capped at 21 billion DGB, with the full amount scheduled to be mined by 2035 through gradually reducing rewards.
Is DigiByte a fork of Bitcoin?
DigiByte launched in 2014 as its own proof-of-work blockchain based on Bitcoin code, with changes including five mining algorithms and a faster block time.
Can I hold DGB in Zypto App?
Not yet. DGB isn't in Zypto App at the moment. You can hold it in any self-custodial wallet, and you can ask us to add DigiByte using the "Request DigiByte" button above.
