How it works

An EVM chain, explained simply.

BNB Chain keeps one shared record that a fixed set of validators agree on, and runs the same smart-contract code as Ethereum. The trade it makes is a smaller validator set for very fast, very cheap blocks. Here are the four ideas behind it.

The shared ledger

Every balance and transaction lives in one public database copied across nodes worldwide. Anyone can read and verify it through any BNB Chain explorer or their own node.

EVM smart contracts

It runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so the same Solidity contracts deploy here unchanged. Tools, wallets and apps built for Ethereum work too, which is why the ecosystem grew quickly.

Gas & fees

Every action costs a small fee in BNB that pays validators and stops spam. The network keeps the gas price very low, so most transactions cost a fraction of a cent.

Proof of Staked Authority

A limited set of validators is elected by how much BNB is staked to them. Fewer validators means fast blocks and quick finality, with stake at risk keeping them honest.

Stake & elect

Validators bond BNB and attract delegated BNB from holders. The top candidates by stake form the active set of 45, refreshed every day.

Take turns

Validators rotate to produce blocks roughly every 0.75 seconds. A small, known set lets blocks confirm and finalize in about a second.

Reward or slash

Validators and their delegators share fee and staking rewards. Downtime or double-signing can cost part of the staked BNB, which keeps the set honest.

Runs the smart-contract code and updates balances. The same bytecode runs on Ethereum and other EVM chains.

A staked, elected validator set agrees on block order and finalizes blocks in about a second. Beacon Chain history was folded in during 2024.

opBNB rollup

An optimiztic rollup that processes transactions off-chain and settles back to BNB Smart Chain, pushing fees down further for high-volume apps.

The network kept producing blocks while folding the old Beacon Chain into BNB Smart Chain in 2024, then cut block time to sub-second through the Maxwell and Fermi upgrades without an extended halt.

Oct 2022A vulnerability in the cross-chain bridge let an attacker mint BNB. Validators paused the chain for several hours to patch it, then resumed; affected funds were frozen and most of the minted BNB never left the chain.

What is BNB Chain in one sentence?

BNB Chain is a public, EVM-compatible blockchain, a shared global computer that runs the same kind of smart contracts as Ethereum but settles transactions in under a second for very low fees.

What's the difference between BNB Chain, BSC and BNB?

BNB Chain is the network. BNB Smart Chain (once called Binance Smart Chain or BSC) is the EVM smart-contract part of it. BNB is the native asset used to pay gas and stake. An older sibling, BNB Beacon Chain, was sunset in 2024 and folded into BNB Smart Chain.

Why are BNB Chain fees so low?

BNB Chain uses a limited, elected validator set under Proof of Staked Authority, which lets it produce sub-second blocks cheaply. The network keeps the gas price very low, so most transactions cost roughly a cent in BNB.
